So, I have discovered what everybody already knew, self-publishing comics yields almost no money at first. So to get some capital to try and keep this going longer, I have started trying for freelance jobs. The title of this comic says it all.
I send out many many query letters and receive almost no response. The two responses I receive are “No” and “WE’D LOVE TO WORK WITH YOU, but we won’t pay you.”
Never has a promise been more empty than the promise of money on “the back end”. I am a novice free-lancer at best, but even I can spot that non-sense.
I have a buddy who has gone through this as well as gotten paying gigs enough to support his family. He said to me: “The world is full of people who have GREAT ideas (or so they think), but absolutely no money. And they will all think your an idiot for not making their idea happen for free.”
This should be etched on stone someplace.
ON ANOTHER NOTE
Have y’all seen my other site?
There I document all the fun stuff that I don’t think would fit here, like my process blog of how I am making my first Children’s Picture Book.
Also, I offer to draw whatever you like for money in the “commissions” section.
While we’re at it, I would really like it if you were to follow me on twitter. That’s where I put up little announcements like when the comic is going up late or when I have a new thing I want to show you.
If you prefer to maintain the level of communication we already have, that’s cool too. I’m just glad you visit my stuff at all.
Hope all is well where you are.
